The first Queen of Italy
Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna di Savoia was the first Queen of Italy, consort of King Umberto I di Savoia.
Since her young age, Margherita expressed a strong personality. Her education was marked by very in-depth studies and a strong intellectual curiosity, unusual for aristocratic girls of those times.

Margherita was able to have considerable influence on political decisions and played a primary role in the government of the kingdom through the intellectuals who she gathered at court.
Her particular way of acting politically was supported by an intense social life, through which she created one of the liveliest aristocratic and intellectual salons of all Europe.

She became a reference both for intellectual circles and for the people. Various works of arts and public spaces were named after Margherita, such as Carducci’s ode to “To the Queen of Italy”, parks, schools, hospitals, the Capanno Margherita refuge and even the famous pizza
